Born October 18th,, 1922, Lloyd Monroe is celebrating his 90th birthday today with family and friends. Family members have been extending their well wishes with trips from out of state ? southern Illinois, Indiana, and Utah. Those of us in Michigan have been celebrating as well.
Dad has seen a lot in his 90 years including the upgrade from horse and wagon to automobiles and tractors. He attended a one room country school, Michigan School for the Blind, and later spent hours listening to over 2,000 talking books for the blind. He still listens to his books and is probably the most well-read member of a family of avid readers.
Not only is he marking his birthday with family, he is also having lunch at one of his favorite restaurants ? Red Lobster. He still has quite an appetite and a desire to eat almost everything in sight. Although he is a diabetic and has been diagnosed with Alzheimer?s, he is still very aware of what is going on around him.
He attends a senior center on Tuesday and Thursday, has in-home care on Monday and Friday, and considers Wednesday his day off. The weekends are a little more settled, but he still keeps his daily routine.
He keeps in touch with special family and friends via his own cellphone, and the seasonal cards sent for his birthday and for Christmas.
His special joy are his great-grandchildren, although the only one he sees at this time is David who is five-years-old. The three girls live quite a long way and he last saw them in August 2011. He does hear about them regularly.
It doesn?t matter how old a person is, life still goes on. It may be a little slower, but it does continue as long as possible. If you have an elderly relative celebrating their birthday, make sure you take the time to call, write, or visit. It means the world to them and only takes a few minutes to make someone smile.
