From The Redlands Daily Facts?..
A new program is springing up in the area that hopes to encourage children to take up a healthy, active lifestyle.
Hailing from Canada, Sportball is an innovative idea that helps children as young as 16 months up to 12 years of age develop gross motor skills in a fun, safe environment.
Founded in 1995 with a single location, the Sportball program has expanded to more than 300 locations in the U.S., Canada and Singapore.
Lori Digulla brought the program to the Redlands-Yucaipa area after moving to the area from Toronto, Canada.
While living up north, she had her young daughter, Kaitlyn, enrolled in the class.
Because of the success of the program for her daughter, Digulla contacted the people behind Sportball to see how easy it could be to bring the program to the Redlands-Yucaipa area.
?I honestly fell in love with it because of my daughter, and the experiences she had with it,? Digulla said.
Digulla loved the fact that her daughter not only embraced the program, but she gained confidence in herself, she said. ?And in her abilities and familiarity. It became everyday life for her. Soon basketball and soccer became part of her ?language.??
Moving to Redlands in February was a big step for Digulla and her family, but once settled, she and her brood ?embraced the community,? she said.
Knowing the success of Sportball from her personal experience, she felt the program would be beneficial to those living in the area. So, she approached the people behind Sportball to bring the program to her new home.
They jumped at the chance, she said.
?I was thrilled to bring my family here,? she said. ?There are lots of families who are looking for ways to engage and excite their children. There?s an epidemic across the country, so many distractions for kids to sit down and watch TV and play video games. Lots of things that discourage kids from being active. So this seemed like an activity that would be embraced by the community.?
Classes began in Redlands two weeks ago and are offered weekly.
Sportball?s mission is to help children develop socially, as well as physically through a curriculum that is designed in an environment that is free from the pressures of competition.
