Gunman Among 7 Dead After Florida Apartment Shooting

An argument at a quiet Hialeah, Fla., apartment complex turned deadly when a gunman killed six people before he was shot to death by a SWAT team after an hours-long standoff, police said.

Among the six victims ? three male and three female ? was a married couple who managed the building, Italo and Samira Pisciotti.

Police said the couple had gone to talk to a tenant who had filed a complaint. Moments later, gunshots rang out.

"A neighbor put in a complaint and they went to talk to another neighbor and that's all we know," the couple's daughter, Shamira Pisciotti, told ABC News.

Police were called to the apartment complex at around 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Hialeah Police Sgt. Eddie Rodriguez told ABC News that before authorities arrived, the gunman was walking through the five-story apartment complex firing randomly at people in the building's hallways and elevators.

The gunman, who is an unidentified male, killed a father who was walking his two children into an apartment from a balcony across the street, police said.

The man realized that shots were being fired and sprinted toward the front door to get his children to safety. While was fatally shot, his children were unharmed, Rodriguez said.

The shooter also killed three people in a unit on the fourth floor.

The gunman was eventually killed by SWAT team members in a different fourth floor apartment where he was holding two people hostage, police said.

While negotiators spent hours trying to convince the man to surrender, talks "just fell apart" with the gunman, and "they made the decision to go in there and save and rescue the hostages," Rodriguez told the Associated Press.

The hostages were unharmed from the ordeal.

While residents were able to escape during the gunfire, some left their doors open which allowed the gunman access to their balconies, Rodriguez said.

Many spent hours in nearby shopping stores on lock down overnight while police tried to clear the scene.

Residents were allowed back into the buildings at approximately 5 a.m. this morning, with the exception of those with units on the fourth and fifth floors.

Police are working to identifying the gunman and the remaining victims, as well as the shooter's motive.
