NHL reaches agreement

The National Hockey League (NHL) and union representing its locked-out players reached agreement on drug testing and player safety on Friday, but did not address the core economic issues standing in the way of a new labor deal. ?We?re taking baby steps right now.? Mathieu Schneider, a special assistant to the NHL Players Association?s executive director, told reporters in New York. ?We are not really discussing anything that has to do with the core economics,? he said. The NHL locked out its players on Sept. 16 when the previous labor deal expired with the two sides at odds over how to divide a US$3.3 billion revenue pie. The lockout, which is the NHL?s fourth work stoppage in 20 years, has already forced the league to cancel its entire preseason schedule.

BASEBALL

Twins drop Nishioka

Japanese infielder Tsuyoshi Nishioka was released on Friday by the Minnesota Twins after a disappointing year with one season remaining on his Major League Baseball contract. The 28-year-old Osaka native was dropped for a US$250,000 buyout to avoid playing him US$3 million next season in the final year of a deal signed in 2010. Nishioka, who helped Japan win the 2006 World Baseball Classic, suffered a broken leg in a collision with New York Yankees outfielder Nick Swisher after playing only 68 games in the 2011 season. Nishioka, who had batted .226 with 19 runs batted in and 14 runs scored before the injury, went hitless in three at-bats for the Twins this season and spent most of the season with their top developmental team, hitting .258 with two home runs and 34 runs batted in over 101 games.

FOOTBALL

Children?s coach fired

The coach of a children?s gridiron team in suburban Los Angeles and the league president have been suspended after allegations in the Orange County Register by parents of a bounty scheme. The bounty system, allegedly used last season to provide payments to 10-year-olds and 11-year-olds for deliberately injuring opponents, follows a similar scheme that led to National Football League bans this year for the New Orleans Saints. The report says parents claim coach Darren Crawford and an assistant offered players on the Red Cobras of the Tustin (California) Junior Pee Wee league cash for hard hits that knocked football rivals out of playoff games. One player suffered a mild concussion as a result of such a hit. National Pop Warner officials said that Crawford and Pat Galentine, who serves as president of the Tustin league, have been suspended until an investigation into the claims has been conducted.

ICE HOCKEY

Kane to play in KHL

Winnipeg Jets forward Evander Kane has reached a deal to play for Dinamo Minsk of the Russia-based Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) for the duration of the National Hockey League (NHL) lockout. Kane became the first Canadian player to sign with a KHL team even as NHL officials and players union leaders renewed talks in hopes of saving a full NHL season in the wake of club owners locking out players almost two weeks ago. The Belarus club announced the agreement on Friday, exactly 40 years to the day after Canada defeated the Soviet Union in ice hockey?s legendary Summit Series. Kane scored 30 goals for the Jets last season and signed a six-year NHL contract extension worth US$31.5 million just before the lockout began.

SKorea: Japan must educate its people about WWII

NEW YORK (AP) ? South Korea's foreign minister said Thursday that Japan's wartime past will overshadow relations between the two staunch U.S. allies until Japan educates its people about crimes committed during colonial rule.

In an interview with The Associated Press on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan said: "We are victims of Japanese colonial rule."

Kim, speaking a few hours before "serious" talks with Japan's foreign minister, also said South Korea would not compromise in its dispute over the tiny Dokdo islands, called Takeshima by Japan, which has further strained ties.

"When the Japanese government claims Dokdo is their territory, Korean people (take) it as another attempt to invade our country," Kim said. "So that's the Korean sentiment and I hope that the Japanese government understands this."

But he said South Korea recognizes its shared interests with fellow-democracy Japan, such as coping with North Korea and its nuclear ambitions. Both Japan and South Korea play host to tens of thousands of U.S. troops.

Kim said Seoul wants to expand relations with Japan, including in military cooperation, but only if South Korean public sentiment allows it. In June, they put on hold an intelligence sharing pact after it provoked an outcry in South Korea.

"We have to try to overcome these differences. It's up to the Japanese attitude. While they maintain their attitude ... there should be some limit on the scope of cooperation," he said.

Japan occupied the Korean peninsula for 35 years until the defeat of fascist forces in World War II and also occupied much of China. Japan issued a formal apology in 1993 over its use of Korean women as sex slaves by its soldiers during the war, but has failed to convince South Korea it is truly contrite.

Kim accused Japanese politicians of denying war crimes and said Japan's failure to educate its people properly about the past was the root cause of its various territorial disputes over islands in the region ? including with Russia and Asia's premier power, China.

"It's in sharp contrast with what Germany did to get the support and respect from the neighboring countries" after World War II, Kim said. "If Japan does it, I'm sure they can (get) respect from neighboring countries."

The dispute escalated last month when South Korean President Lee Myung-bak made an unprecedented visit to Dokdo, which drew unusually stern criticism from Japan. South Korea has rejected a Japanese proposal for the dispute to be settled in the International Court of Justice.

On Wednesday, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda stuck by Japan's stance on the islands, but said it did not want it to adversely affect relations with South Korea.

The issue stirs particularly strong nationalist passions among Koreans, as Japan's takeover of Dokdo in 1905 presaged its annexation of Korea five years later. South Korea took the islands back in the early 1950s and deploys police there.

Kim and Japan's Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba discussed the island dispute and historical issues including "comfort women," in their 30-minute meeting Thursday, said Japanese ministry spokeswoman Naoko Saiki. She would not disclose the substance of the exchanges but characterized them as "serious."

Saiki said they also discussed North Korea, and that despite the current difficulties between Japan and South Korea, the ministers agreed they have to cooperate and strive for "stable, forward-looking relations."

In the interview, Kim said that South Korea remains open to better relations with North Korea, and that it was disappointed when its offer earlier this month to provide flood relief to North Korea was rebuffed as inadequate by Pyongyang.

He also said that since North Korea's failed attempt in April to launch a satellite, "Trust has regressed." The unsuccessful launch was deemed by the U.S. to have military implications and to violate prior agreement by North Korea to suspend ballistic missile testing.

In spite of North Korea's new leader, Kim Jong Un, setting a somewhat more modern and open style, there has been no practical improvement in relations with South Korea or the United States with Pyongyang.

The United States, China and South Korea are all going through elections or leadership changes late this year, Kim noted, suggesting that any significant resumption of diplomatic activity with North Korea may have to wait.

Chrome for Android now fully compatable with x86 devices

Android Central

Google's Chrome for Android browser, much loved by those with an Android 4.0 and above device, has finally been updated to be fully compatible with x86 devices. This is a big deal, as one of the snags when it came to Android devices running Intel chips (OK, there aren't that many yet) was incompatibility of apps -- even popular ones like Chrome. What this shows us is that Google is devoted to updating its own apps to work on the Intel platform, and hopefully now other app developers will follow suit with their own updates.

We've had a look at a few Intel devices at this point, most recently the Motorola RAZR i, and hopefully with application support like this we'll see more in the future.

AP Interview: Ahmadinejad pushes new world order

(AP Photo/Bebeto Matthews)

(AP) ? After an hour of fielding questions about Syria, sanctions and nuclear weapons, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had enough. Now, he said, it was his turn to choose the topic ? his "new order" which will inevitably replace the current era of what he called U.S. bullying.

Continuing his hectic pace of media appearances and diplomatic meetings, Ahmadinejad presented an air of boredom when it came to the hot topic on everyone's mind ? Iran's nuclear program and the possibility of impending war. Whether it was feigned or sincere, he said he would much rather be talking about his vision of what the next world order might be.

Conveniently, it would be an order in which the U.S. and the traditional powers play a smaller role and every country has equal standing (though the state of Israel, he often predicts, will soon become a historical footnote).

"God willing, a new order will come and will do away with ... everything that distances us," Ahmadinejad told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview Tuesday, speaking through a translator. "All of the animosity, all of the lack of sincerity will come to an end. It will institute fairness and justice."

He said the world was losing patience with the current state of affairs.

"Now even elementary school kids throughout the world have understood that the United States government is following an international policy of bullying," he said. "I do believe the system of empires has reached the end of the road. The world can no longer see an emperor commanding it."

The interview was held on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly ? Ahmadinejad's last as president of Iran. He was to address the assembly Wednesday morning.

He also discussed solutions for the Syrian civil war, dismissed the question of Iran's nuclear ambition and claimed that despite Western sanctions his country is better off than it was when he took office in 2005.

Earlier Tuesday, President Barack Obama warned Iran that time is running out to resolve the dispute over its nuclear program. In a speech to the General Assembly, Obama said the United States could not tolerate an Iran with atomic weapons.

Ahmadinejad would not respond directly to the president's remarks, saying he did not want to influence the U.S. presidential election in November.

But he argued that the international outcry over Iran's nuclear enrichment program was just an excuse by the West to dominate his country. He claimed that the United States has never accepted Iran's choice of government after the 1979 Islamic revolution.

"Everyone is aware the nuclear issue is the imposition of the will of the United States," he said. "I see the nuclear issue as a non-issue. It has become a form of one-upmanship."

Ahmadinejad said he favored more dialogue, even though negotiations with world powers remain stalled after three rounds of high-level meetings since April.

He said some world leaders have suggested to him that Iran would be better off holding nuclear talks only with the United States.

"Of course I am not dismissing such talks," he said, asked if he were open to discussions with the winner of the American presidential election.

Israeli leaders, however, are still openly contemplating military action again Iranian nuclear facilities, dismissing diplomacy as a dead end. Israel and many in the West suspect that Iran is seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, and cite its failure to cooperate fully with nuclear inspectors. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Ahmadinejad also proposed forming a new group of 10 or 11 countries to work to end the 18-month Syrian civil war. Representatives of nations in the Middle East and elsewhere would meet in New York "very soon," he said.

Critics have accused Tehran of giving support to Syrian President Bashar Assad in carrying out massacres and other human rights violations in an attempt to crush the uprising against his rule. Activists say nearly 30,000 people have died.

Ahmadinejad said the so-called contact group hopes to get the Syrian government and opposition to sit across from each other.

"I will do everything in my power to create stability, peace and understanding in Syria," Ahmadinejad said.

Earlier this month, Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi announced the formation of a four-member contact group with Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. But Saudi Arabia so far has not participated.

Ahmadinejad denied Iranian involvement in plotting attacks on Israelis abroad, despite arrests and accusations by police in various countries. He also vehemently disputed the U.S. claim that Iranian agents played a role in a foiled plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States last year.

Ahmadinejad will leave office next June after serving two four-year terms. He threw out numbers and statistics during the interview to show that Iran's economy and the lives of average Iranians have improved under his watch. Since his 2005 election, he claimed, Iran went from being the world's 22nd-largest economy to the 17th-largest; non-petroleum related exports increased sevenfold; and the basic production of goods has doubled. Median income increased by $4,000, he said.

It was not possible to immediately verify his figures.

"Today's conditions in Iran are completely different to where they were seven years ago in the economy, in technical achievement, in scientific know-how," Ahmadinejad said. "All of these achievements, though, have been reached under conditions in which we were brought under heavy sanctions."

Iran has called for the U.S. and its European allies to ease the sanctions that have hit its critical oil exports and left it blackballed from key international banking networks.

Ahmadinejad said he had no knowledge of the whereabouts of Robert Levinson, a private investigator and former FBI agent who vanished in Iran five years ago. He said he directed Iranian intelligence services two years ago to work with their counterparts in the U.S. to locate him.

"And if any help there is that I can bring to bear, I would be happy to do so," he said.

He also claimed never to have heard of Amir Hekmati, a former U.S. Marine who is imprisoned on espionage charges in Iran. Hekmati was arrested while visiting his grandmothers in Iran in August 2011, and his family has been using Ahmadinejad's visit to New York to plead for his release.

In spite of Ahmadinejad's assertions on the importance of dialogue and respect for others, he has presented a hard line in many areas in this week's media appearances.

He refuses to speak of the state of Israel by name and instead refers only to the "Zionists." And when asked on Monday about author Salman Rushdie, he made no attempt to distance himself from recent renewed threats on the author's life emanating from an Iranian semi-official religious foundation.

"If he is in the U.S.," said the president of Iran, "you should not broadcast it for his own safety."

Is Jimmy Hoffa's body buried at Detroit-area home?

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

Jimmy Hoffa and his son, James P. Hoffa, who later also became president of the Teamsters, in a 1971 photo.

The FBI and local police in Michigan plan to take soil samples from the backyard of a house in the Detroit suburb of Roseville on Friday, acting on a dying man's tip that the body of former Teamsters President Jimmy Hoffa might be buried there.

Authorities have chased down hundreds of would-be leads since Hoffa disappeared 37 years ago after he met with two top Mafia operatives at a restaurant in Bloomfield Township, another Detroit suburb, in July 1975. All have led to dead ends, but authorities said this lead could be different.

NBC station WDIV-TV of Detroit reported that?an unidentified man who is dying from cancer told Roseville police that he saw men moving a black bag at the garage of the house just hours after Hoffa went missing. Acting on the tip, authorities?ran radar tests last week that picked up an image of something buried beneath a cement slab in the backyard.

Roseville Police Chief James Berlin confirmed that investigators had received the tip, telling the Detroit Free Press that "the information seemed credible, so we decided to follow up on it."

The newspaper reported that the house is in the 18700 block of Florida Street in northern Roseville, about 20 miles northeast of Detroit.

The disappearance of Hoffa ? who ran the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the country's biggest labor union, from 1957 to 1971 ? has long fueled conspiracy theories. At various times, his body was posited to have been buried under Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.; beneath General Motors headquarters at Detroit's Renaissance Center; on a farm in Hartland Township, Mich.; in a field in Milford, Mich.; and even on the grounds of the White House.?

What is known is that Hoffa, who was then 62, was chafing at restrictions on his activity in the Teamsters that President Richard Nixon imposed when he commuted Hoffa's 1967 federal prison sentence for fraud and jury tampering in 1971 (he continued to run the union from his prison cell). On July 30, 1975, Hoffa was scheduled to meet with?Anthony "Tony Jack" Giacalone, capo of the Detroit Mafia, and Anthony "Tony Pro" Provenzano, a former Teamsters vice president who was also a captain in the Genovese crime family, at a restaurant called the Machus Red Fox in Bloomfield Township.

In a 1976 "here we stand" memo published several years later, the FBI speculated that Hoffa reluctantly agreed to the meeting to try to smooth over differences with?Provenzano and Giacalone, who were reportedly perturbed that Hoffa was trying to get back into the Teamsters' leadership, That, presumably, would have lessened the mob's control over the union.

"It is believed that the hit, if there was one, would have been approved at very highest levels within the Organized Crime structure," the FBI concluded. "If this be the case, it would tend to lend credence to the evidence that PROVENZANO or certainly someone at his level, both within the Teamsters Union and (Mafia), was responsible."

Read the 1976 FBI memo (.pdf)

Hoffa's body has never been found. Provenzano was later convicted of an unrelated murder and died in 1988; Giacalone, who was imprisoned for tax fraud, died in 2001.

Solid Internet Marketing Advice For A New Business

Find out as much as you can about your regular visitors to your site. This can be done using basic (usually free) or enterprise level (for large sites) web analytic services. By knowing your audience, you will be able to add the content that they seek. This is sure to drive up the amount of traffic to your site.

You should advertise your website online but also in the real world: tell everyone you know about your business. Do not push people to buy your products. Simply let them know about what you are doing. If they ever need the kind of products you sell, they will think about you.

You should join a few forum about online business and ask others what they think of your website and marketing strategies. Offer people to review their sites in exchange. You could also have customers review your site for you if you offer them a free sample or a free product in exchange.

Create an impression of stability and durability in your online marketing copy by replacing the words ?buy? and ?pay for? with more optimistic phrases that compare the purchase to an investment in their own future. This makes the sale seem more practical and responsible and less of a splurge. Reinforce the idea by including feedback from other customers who have echoed that sentiment.

Combine useful products into a package deal. Offering each single product at a higher price, but combining them into one that would be lower for each item is a tactic used by thousands of stores throughout the world, simply because it works. Customers would likely purchase these products at some point anyway, so allowing them to do it as a cheaper bundle is a great incentive.

If you are going to use a video or a picture on your website, make sure you tag it properly. People using Google Images or a similar search engine will find your picture and end up on your website if they click on it. It works the same way with videos.

Choose a professional email address. When you take the time to set up a professional looking website, do not lose your customer right when they wish to contact you. While an email to ?yobigdaddy? may seem humorous, it can come across as extremely unprofessional. Stick with your name or your business name, and save the humor for your personal address.

While there may be no ?perfect? system in existence, there are a lot of simple methods and techniques that can be utilized to greatly increase your profits. It takes time, dedication, and study within your niche to climb the ladder, but in the end it will all be worth it.

Queens, NY ? Five people were killed and three others were injured after an SUV slammed into a concrete pillar early Sunday, July 22, 2012. The fatal automobile accident occurred around 3:15 a.m. on Atlantic Avenue in Queens, reported New York Daily News.

According to reports, a speeding black Mercedes Benz SUV was traveling east on Atlantic Avenue when it blew through two red traffic lights, crashed into a concrete pillar and rolled several times before coming to a rest against a fence and burst into flames.

An FDNY veteran told NY Daily News that, ?This is the worst single car accident I?ve gone to in my career.?

Responding emergency crews used three Jaw of Life tools to extricate two boys, ages 7 and 9, from the rear window of the burning SUV.

An 8-year-old girl that was thrown from the vehicle was found dead about 10 feet from the SUV. Three other women also died in the wreck.

One of the three deceased women was found dead, still wearing her seat belt in the front passenger seat. A second woman was ejected from the vehicle, while the third victim was pinned underneath the SUV.

The 45-year-old driver, her 7-year-old son, and 26-year-old man who were ejected from the vehicle were rushed to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition.

Investigations into the deadly crash are underway. Police are still determining if drugs or alcohol played a factor.

Dave Cooper Is Unemployed: The World's Gone Mad!

I mean, this isn't fucking Los Angeles, so why the hell do people want everything to be so different? Why do things have to be written in neon, covered in cheap plastic, and written in ten different languages, so foreigners ? God bless them ? can understand what I sell, and what they can eat? The world's gone fucking mad, but if you want to survive, so you've got enough money to retire on, you've got to follow the crowd.

I'm too old for this new stuff, which is why I think the old days were the best. You know, people would come into the pub, buy a drink, smoke a cigarette, and have a chat. Perhaps they would then buy another drink, have another cigarette, and then be on their way. I sold beer or spirits, and wine by the glass was unheard of, because people in south-east London didn't drink wine back then. Food was a packet of peanuts or nothing at all, and certainly not salmon, new potatoes and a green salad. But it's all changed, and because I'm old and too slow to keep up with things, I really wish that I was no longer here.

Sid, the landlord of our local pub, having to deal with change. Extract taken from "The Londoners" - by Luke Ryman.
